English
In Reception, the children build on the Phonics scheme introduced in Nursery. Reading is taught through the scheme and writing is developed throughout the year. The children love writing their invitations to Nativity plays and to their Mother’s Day and Father’s Day celebrations!
The Phonics scheme continues into Year 1 and children’s individual abilities are catered for in small Phonics groups.
In Year 1 and 2, the Creative Curriculum is used to link English to topics. We immerse our children in a variety of rich texts, forming the foundations for grammar and writing tasks. Of course, we also encourage them to freely express their ideas and feelings through their writing. For example, Year 2 wrote Fire poems after sitting around a campfire in our bluebell woods.
The love of reading and texts is promoted through book clubs, library visits and daily reading homework. The annual World Book Day celebrations are enjoyed by all, culminating in the eagerly anticipated Dress Up Day.
