Science and Engineering
Our aim is to develop our children’s natural scientific curiosity. We do this by encouraging pupils to ask questions, carry out investigations, and use what they discover to make sense of the world around them.
Our children are given plenty of opportunities to experiment, observe, collaborate and communicate. The Prep pupils are taught in our two well-equipped Science laboratories. Practical work, field studies, competitions, trips and workshops are also organised to complement the children’s classwork. We have taken part in citizen science projects, such as the Thames Water for Wildlife. Chandlings has close connections with the local scientific community including Culham Science Centre who have visited to share their work about fusion with the children.
Built into the curriculum there are several engineering and STEM projects such as designing and building trebuchets and rafts.
We’re lucky to have extensive grounds with a variety of habitats to study including a safe pond-dipping pontoon on the lake and a bird hide.
We collaborate with local naturalists and welcome visiting speakers throughout the year. Our children are taught to respect living things and the environment while enjoying themselves. For instance, each year group has ‘adopted’ a tree in the School grounds which they visit to support their learning across the curriculum. Through this, they learn about the flora and fauna found here at Chandlings Prep.
